• De Corte
Ernest M. and Marilyn (de Gruchy) De Corte will celebrate their 62nd anniversary Feb. 14.
They were married Feb. 14, 1951, at the Tau Kappa fraternity house at Oklahoma A&M.
Mrs. De Corte was born Sept. 21, 1931, in Stillwater to Dr. James and Mrs. de Gruchy. Following her graduation from Stillwater High School in 1950, she joined her family in Japan, where her father had been asked to help the Japanese reestablish their fishing industry.
She returned to Stillwater to enter Oklahoma A&M.
De Corte became the first foreign affairs major to graduate from Oklahoma A&M. Later he retired from the federal government and the U.S. Army.
The De Cortes were employed by the U.S. government in June 1951 and were posted to Okinawa.
Mrs. De Corte worked with the medical staff and helped prepare medical supplies to be dropped to the French troops fighting the Viet Cong at Dien Bien Phu.
In November 1953, she gave birth at the Army hospital on Okinawa to her first child, Michelle, just before the De Cortes were rotated to Washington, D.C.
The following year she gave birth to her first son, Rodney, in Alexandra, Va.
The following year the De Corte family was assigned to the embassy in Karachi, Pakistan. While there, they toured the northern territories of Pakistan and into Afghanistan. They were in Karachi during the first military coup.
Just before their reassignment, Mrs. De Corte gave birth to her second son (and third child), Guy.
Two years later, the De Cortes were assigned to the Philippines. Following a rotation to Washington, D.C., they were assigned to the Panama Canal Zone.
The couple has visited Australia, New Zealand, Alaska and much of Europe including the island of Jersey, which was the home of the de Gruchys before Mrs. De Corte’s great-grandfather immigrated to the United States.
The De Cortes make their home in both Oregon and Virginia. They are avid horse people, hunting fox in Virginia and deer in France. They spend their vacations in the mountains of Oregon and on the Pacific beaches.
