Charles and Alta Flowers Porter Jr., will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on June 14, 2012, by having dinner at their home with their sons.
The two were married June 14, 1942, before the Rev. V.A. Doty, in his home in Stillwater. They have two sons, Charles H. Porter III and late wife Connie Flager Porter, and John L. Porter and wife Patti Lance Porter; four grandchildren: Dr. Charles H. Porter IV and wife Sherylynn, Jaylon Martin and husband Michael, Tressa Diesselhorst and husband Jake, and Shandra Porter; three great-grandchildren: Gabriel Diesselhorst, Hannah Diesselhorst, and Abigail Porter.
The Porters are charter members of Sunnybrook Christian Church in Stillwater.
Porter got his call for the Air Force on Oct. 7, 1942. He served in Denver, Colo., and at William Field in Arizona. His wife joined him in both places. She worked in the telephone office for Southwestern Bell in Chandler, Ariz., for year and a half.
Charles was called to overseas duty in Manila, Philippines. Alta went home during this time.
After being discharged from duty, he came to Stillwater and attended agriculture school at Oklahoma State University for four years.
Then he returned to the farm, where he had dairy and stock cattle. He also worked for the Payne County Conservation Office for many years. Before retiring, he worked as an insurance agent for Farmer’s Union for 55 years.
