Molers celebrate 60th anniversary

Sixty years ago, May 15, 1954, William Joseph Moler and Oleta Fern Babcock spoke their marriage vows to each other, and to our Lord God, promising that two have become one until we are separated by death only.

This weekend, their five children, spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren will all celebrate, if not in person, in the same spirit of love spoken 60 years ago, the anniversary of this Sacrament of Holy Matrimony.

Oleta and Bill met during his leave from the US Navy and their relationship continued on through phone calls and mail while he dutifully served in the Korean War.

Oleta graduated from Po-Hi, in Ponca City, where she played saxophone in the jazz band.

After graduation, she sold her saxaphone to finance her train ticket to Los Angeles where she was to live with an older sister, and work for Hughes Aircraft Co, and to be closer to Bill. When Bill’s ship returned to California from Korea in the early spring of 1954, they began to make plans for their wedding at the Catholic church in Culver City, a suburb of Los Angeles, CA.

From this union five children were born, Catherine Anne Asmussen, Theresa J. Abernathy, Roberta E. Moler (Mitchell), Robert Wayne Moler and William R. Moler.  From these, the couple now has 15 grandchildren and almost as many great grandchildren.

After Bill finished his service in the Navy in November 1954, they drove back to Ponca City so Bill could find a job and they could find a place to live.

He had a friend that worked for Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. at Belle Isle Lake in north Oklahoma City.

He called his friend and arranged an interview, and soon was offered a job as an electrician helper at that plant.  Twenty years later, he was named as manager of the Belle Isle Power Plant.

In 1977, he was offered the assistant manager’s job at OG&E’s Sooner Station; a new coal-fired electrical generating plant between Stillwater and Ponca City. After having open-heart surgery in 1987, Bill decided it was time to retire after 33 years of service.

Oleta’s work history ranged from New York Life Insurance Company in Oklahoma City, and as a Career Coordinator at the Putnam City High School.

After moving to Stillwater, Oleta worked at Mercury Marine in the Human Resources Department providing compassionate assistance to those needing help with their benefits, sick leave, FMLA, etc. She worked there for 10 years.

Both Bill and Oleta, have spent years sharing themselves with others, unconditionally, and showing others the example of love, commitment, and dedication needed to be servants of our Lord.

It is no surprise then, because of their respect, communication, patience, faith, prayer and love of God, all rolled up with laughter; have taught many what it truly means to go through the trials and the rewards that are inherent in all marriages.

A family gathering was held Saturday at their residence at the Golden Oaks Living Center, and the couple once again recited their vows after the 5 p.m. mass Saturday at St. Francis Xavier church in Stillwater.
