Bill and Sharon Brown 50th

• Brown

Bill and Sharon Brown will celebrate their 50th anniversary Friday in Stillwater.

They were married Sept. 2, 1961.

They have three children, Dana, Tammi and Danny. Dana and her husband, Don Mallett, have three grown children, Kayla, Sonya and Kyle. Sonya and her husband, Brant Patterson, are both recent Oklahoma State University graduates. Tammi and her husband, Robert Pitts, another OSU graduate, have a daughter, Ashley.

The Browns met in September 1959 while both were sophomores at Oklahoma State University. She proposed to him during a stroll around Theta Pond during Sadie Hawkins week. They graduated together in May 1962. She received a degree in home economics and education, and he received a degree in arts and science.

He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army the same day and served on active duty for 21 years. During his active duty years, Brown earned two master’s degrees from OSU, and Mrs. Brown earned a master’s degree from OSU and a public education counseling certification from Texas.

After his Army career, Brown worked at Central Texas College for 10 years and at Texas Department of Health for nine years before retiring again. Mrs. Brown, in addition to being a wife, mother and grandmother, also worked in public education for eight years as an elementary teacher and 19 years as a middle school counselor.

The Browns decided in 2001 to move back to Stillwater and OSU. They have lived in 27 homes from England, Germany and Turkey to Virginia, Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma. Brown served a total of four years away from the family in Vietnam and Korea. After his active duty years in the Army, traveling became a favorite treat with trips to Europe, the Caribbean and Hawaii.

Life now is dedicated to family, First Christian Church, OLLI classes and volunteer work in the Stillwater community. As members of the OSU Emeriti Association and the Alumni Association, they host game days and attend OSU sports events.

“I love the high energy stuff,” he said. “Even though it’s country, being able to rock it up, distorted guitars and just seeing the crowd, feeding off of that.”
