Alvin (Sonny) and Lynda Rains, of Stillwater, will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on June 23. They were married on June 23, 1962, in Rose Chapel at Boston Avenue Methodist Church in Tulsa. Lynda graduated from Tulsa Central and Sonny graduated from C.E. Donart in Stillwater. Both went on to attend college at Oklahoma State University. In his early career, Sonny was a carpenter and house doctor at Ingram Lumber. He then went on to establish a 28-year career with the Stillwater Fire Department, where he retired as Assistant Fire Chief. Lynda entered a long-time career with Avon and is currently in her 43rd year as an Avon consultant and product distributor.
Lynda and Sonny have one son, Shan L. (Andrea) Rains. Shan is Assistant Athletics Director of Facilities and Operations for OSU athletics. Andrea is an elementary school principal with Stillwater Public Schools. They have two granddaughters, Kristye and Shelbye. Kristye is a massage therapist at Bair Chiropractic and is a student at OSU, majoring in elementary education. Shelbye is in her third year at OSU, majoring in psychology. She marches for the OSU Color Guard.
Sonny and Lynda love to travel. Their favorite travel destinations are Arkansas, Missouri and South Carolina. To celebrate their anniversary, they will travel to Eureka Springs to enjoy shopping and sightseeing.
Sonny’s hobbies include fishing and keeping a “perfect’’ yard. His newest hobby is motorcycle riding. Lynda has always enjoyed helping others, and she demonstrates this by her numerous hours of volunteer work at Stillwater Medical Center and Karmen Korner Re-Sale Shop.
Lynda enjoys floral gardening and is also a great cook. She loves to bake chocolate chip cookies for her family and is famous for her homemade banana nut bread and sourdough bread.
An in-state celebration for Oklahoma family members will be held at Yost Lake the last weekend in June.
The couple plans to celebrate with out of state family members this fall by traveling to Tennessee and Kentucky.
