TO DO THIS WEEKEND: OSU Brass Day features guest concerts


WHAT: OSU Brass Day is open to brass players of all ages including band directors and community members and features concerts open to the public throughout the day.

WHEN: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday

WHERE: Oklahoma State University Seretean Center for the Performing Arts

TICKETS: Registration is $15 and includes all-day events and final concert. For the guest artist concert only, tickets are $8 general admission and $6 for students and senior citizens.


• The day’s schedule features:

9 a.m.  — OSU Faculty Brass Quintet Concert

10:30 a.m. —  Guest Artist Jazz Concert

12:30 p.m. — OSU Brass Ensembles Concert

2:30 p.m. — Guest Artist Recital

3:30 p.m. — Guest Artist Master Class

5 p.m. — Final Concert of Participant Ensembles

• Craig Morris, professor of trumpet and chairman of the brass program at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, trombonist Jim Pugh, professor of jazz studies at the University of Illinois, and Stockton Helbing, current drummer for Doc Severinsen’s band, are guest artists at the 2:30 p.m. concert. Morris is a world-renowned orchestral trumpeter who served as principal trumpet for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

• Pugh will perform a jazz concert at 10:30 a.m. He was lead trombonist for Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd as well as Chick Corea’s Return to Forever Band. He has added his sound to feature film soundtracks including A League of Their Own, When Harry Met Sally, and Meet Joe Black and on hit Broadway cast recordings City of Angels, Fosse and Victor/Victoria.


“Members of the community of any age and expertise will have the opportunity to play and attend master classes, along with hearing esteemed guest artists. Performances by participant ensembles will be presented in a final concert,” said Ryan Gardner, OSU assistant professor of trumpet.
