Stillwater High School band members heading to Atlanta for competition

STILLWATER, Okla. — Members of the Stillwater High School Concert Band and Wind Ensemble are set to compete in Atlanta this weekend.

Director Kevin Zamborsky said the group will perform before judges Saturday at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Hall. The Concert Band will perform at noon and the Wind Ensemble at 3:30 p.m. The group left Stillwater at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on charter buses.

“We will arrive tomorrow about noon or so and tomorrow we have some sightseeing and a rehearsal scheduled,” said Zamborsky.

Friday will be another day of sightseeing and a performance by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

Zamborsky said this is the first time the group has gone to this competition in Atlanta.

“Three or four years ago we went to a heritage festival in Chicago and a few years prior to that we made it to an adjudicators festival in St. Louis,” said Zamborsky.

Zamborsky explained the process the students will go through.

“(The students will) play for a panel of adjudicators who are nationally recognized and they will evaluate us in several different areas,” said the band director.

That score translates to a ranking from one to five with a one being a superior rating. Zamborsky said he expects the students to do a great job.

“We had state contest last week and both groups performed very well,” said Zamborsky. “They’re playing challenging music and I think that’s respected by the judges.”

The group will return on Sunday.
