Stillwater Chamber Singers hosting concert Monday

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Stillwater Chamber Singers will present their spring concert “Sounds of Nature” Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Stillwater.

The one-hour show begins at 7:30 p.m.

The group’s set list includes “At the Round Earth’s Imagined Corners,” based on a poem by John Donne, and German pieces including “Im Walde,” “Es Fiel Ein Reif,” and “Auf dem See” and “The Garden of the Seraglio” by Wilhelm Stenhammer. Other pieces being performed include “Soir Sur La Plaine” by Lili Boulanger, which will feature four female and two male soloists, “Kangaroo” by Sergei Ekimov, a three-piece set from Eric Whitacre and “Fellar” by Harry Somers.

President and soprano member Deanne Fort said this concert strays from what the group is usually known to perform.

“It’s a little bit lighter than perhaps what we’ve done (in the past),” said Fort.

She said the French piece by Boulanger features a challenging piano part. The group has enjoyed rehearsing the songs, she said.

“We’ve grown to love them more and more as we’ve rehearsed them,” said Fort.

She said she hopes the audience will find them “light hearted.”

“I just hope they enjoy the harmonies and the variety of pieces,” said Fort.

Admission is free. The Stillwater Chamber Singers are comprised of 25 members Ponca City, Stillwater, Tulsa and Oklahoma City.

“We’re a professional ensemble,” said Fort. “As soon as we’re done with this, we begin to rehearse for the Mozart requiem. We will be doing that with the Bartlesville Chorus June 13 at the Mozart Festival in Bartlesville.”

Fort said the group is always open to auditioning new members.

As for the upcoming spring concert, Fort said they hope to attract new listeners, too.

“We have a very loyal following of people who come to our concerts, but we’d love to, perhaps with this lighter concert, reach people who haven’t heard us before,” said Fort.

For more information on the concert or auditioning for the group, call Deanne Fort at 612-2279.
