Small Business Conferences focuses on building relationships

STILLWATER, Okla. — Building relationships is vital to business success. It’s as key as a great location or a sound business plan.

The fourth annual Small Business Conference will focus on relationships from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Stillwater Public Library, 1107 S. Duck Street, Payne County Extension Educator Suzette Barta said.

The conference will focus on three areas.

• Social media

• Personal networking

• Basic business structures.

The conference costs $25. Register online at smallbiz.okstate.edu. Deadline is Oct. 19.

“We are targeting existing very small and home-based businesses,” Barta said, adding it would be appropriate for new or potential startups as well.

Kyle Eastham, founder/executive director of Bold Step, will be the conference’s opening speaker. Bold Step works with universities to reduce sexual assaults against college women.

Eastham hold a master’s degree in entrepreneurship and is an adjunct professor in the OSU’s School of Entrepreneurship. He will be speaking on networking, Barta said.

Conference particpants probably will put networking into practice during Eastham’s session, she said.

Megan Horton, manager of OSU Web Initiatives, will discuss how to evaluate social media efforts.

Mandy Gross, communications specialist at the Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center, will discuss social media strategies at the lunch session.

Brian Whitacre will focus on PayPal, guiding participants through a hands-on exercise that will allow them to start accepting payments on their websites.

Cosette Armstrong will present a session on visual merchandising, which should be of interest to businesses with a storefront. Monika Turek, OSU accounting department, will discuss basic business structure, including LLC formation.

The Small Business Conference is sponsored by Payne County OSU Extension, the Robert M. Kerr Food & Ag Products Center, Meridian Technology’s Center for Business Development and the Stillwater Public Library.
