Stillwater's fitness, tanning facility rebrands after Tan and Tone America's collapse

STILLWATER, Okla. — Tan & Tone America’s abrupt closure on July 23 caught consumers and the owner of its Stillwater franchise off-guard, Stillwater franchise owner Todd Crosby said Wednesday.

The Oklahoma City-based fitness and tanning company closed its metropolitan Oklahoma City locations July 23. Owners Ed and Becky Shelby said in a statement on the company’s website revenues kept declining despite efforts to turn the company around.

The company’s demise set into motion a series of actions by the Department of Consumer Credit.

Chief Consumer Credit Examiner Mary Keel said the closing of Tan & Tone America’s corporate locations led the department to inspect the buildings of the franchise locations.

The problem for the Stillwater franchise, 235 S. Main Street, Crosby said, was the corporate offices purchased the required credit and spa licenses for the corporate-run stores and the franchises. When the corporation ceased operation, the licenses were voided.

The Department of Consumer Credit told the Stillwater facility to stop operating as a spa because it didn’t have a license. It ordered the Stillwater, Chickasha, Ponca City and Ardmore franchises to stop making credit sales without authorization because the corporation held that license as well.

“We had to rebrand ourselves overnight,” Crosby said. “The closing greatly affected us.”

The Stillwater facility is now called Tan & Tone Unlimited. It has obtained all the appropriate licenses and permits and is open, Crosby said. It also waived any hearings associated with the spa and credit issues, and paid approximately $4,000 in fines.

“We were legal again within 24 hours,” Crosby said.
