Shinn at 3 p.m.: Recruiting used to be a different animal

NORMAN, Okla. — Recruiting has changed a lot over the years.

There's so many NCAA rules about coaches contacting players that it's difficult not to have a minor infraction or two along the way.

When former OU coach Billy Tubbs was recruiting guard Mookie Blaylock back in 1987 it was an entirely different situation. Coaches could go see a player in person anytime or anywhere.

Blaylock actually signed his letter of intent to come to OU in a terminal at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Blaylock was flying back to his junior college in Midland, Texas, after a recruiting trip to Kansas. He had a layover a DFW. Tubbs and assistant coach Mike Mims met Blaylock when he got off the plane from Kansas.

"Where Kansas made a mistake, they could have flown back with him to Midland. But they didn't. And we intercepted him in Dallas because he had to change planes there," Tubbs said. "We intercepted him in Dallas and got the whole thing done."
