Charlie Moore finding his place among loaded Cowboy receiving corps

STILLWATER, Okla. — Two years ago, Oklahoma State receiver Charlie Moore burst on to the scene in the spring game with nine catches for 243 yards — looking very much like the heir apparent to NFL first-round pick Justin Blackmon.

Now he’s just trying to see the field.

With weapons like Tracy Moore, Blake Jackson and Josh Stewart, the senior receiver has almost become a forgotten fourth man of the Cowboys’ receiving corp.

“I’m fine with it,” Moore said. “As long as guys are getting first downs and making plays, I’m happy with that. I love those guys. We all support each other, so as long as those guys are making those plays that makes it more fun for me.”

Moore may not be on everyone’s watch list this season even after finishing second on the team with 35 catches and six touchdowns, but he has caught the eye of one person — Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich.

“Charlie’s a very productive receiver,” Yurcich said. “He’s very intelligent and understands the game very well. Charlie is a guy that works on his craft very much. He understands the intricacies that go into being a good wide receiver.”

One of those intricacies? Learning how to be a team player.

“I don’t look at it like (I’m sharing the ball),” Moore said. “I know my role on the team and I just try to be the best I can be.”

That may mean fewer catches. Or it could mean a lot more.

“I don’t know if he’s a secret weapon,” Yurcich said. “I think when people see 17 lined up, I don’t think there’s any secrets.

“If you take away one (receiver) then we’ll go to the other. It’s not about one guy. I think this receiving corps understands that. They’re very unselfish and they understand that some of the routes they run will open up other receivers. Charlie’s one of the guys and — depending on what type of coverage and double teams the opponent has going — he could end up being the leading receiver just as easy as any of the rest of them. We’re going to throw to open people and take what the defense gives us.”

A former high school quarterback, Moore hasn’t had much trouble recognizing holes in the defense. And while he may not have as many catches this year, there’s little doubt that he will have an impact.

“He’s going to have a huge impact for us,” Oklahoma State receiver Tracy Moore said. “He’s one of those guys that does all the little things. You might not see it, but he’s out there making it easier on all of us.”

And even as the Cowboys prepare to open against Mississippi State, Charlie Moore said he isn’t backing down any time soon — especially with guys like sophomore Brandon Sheperd gunning for his starting spot.

“I’m just working harder, not taking anything for granted and just enjoying each moment with all these guys and doing everything I can to help out,” Moore said. “Once you do that, good things will happen.”
