STILLWATER, Okla. —
Keli Cunningham, associate athletic director for compliance at West Virginia, said that the violation will not prevent the Mountaineers from competing in either the Big 12 conference tournament or the NCAA postseason tournament. She said the oversight will not affect any player’s eligibility and the only repercussions will be a forfeiture of two games next year — meaning WVU will only be permitted to play 54 games instead of the NCAA maximum of 56.
West Virginia has been in Oklahoma City since facing Oklahoma State in the regular season finale last weekend at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium where the Cowboys won two of three. The Mountaineers open the conference tournament at Bricktown Ballpark against Kansas at 4 p.m. Thursday and will take on OSU at 4 p.m. Saturday.
