Cowboys' Cobbins coming along with rehab

STILLWATER, Okla. — After missing parts of the last two basketball seasons due to injury – the latest being the entire conference season with an Achilles tear – Oklahoma State’s Michael Cobbins has learned to appreciate the little things.

That’s why he took to Twitter Tuesday with exciting news to share. For the first time since sustaining the season-ending injury at the beginning of January, Cobbins dunked a basketball.

“I was excited about that,” Cobbins said in interview with the News Press Wednesday after a rehab session. “I had to take a minute and just really let it sink in. I was like, ‘Really? I just dunked again!’ I’d been missing dunking it had been so long.”

One day after the dunk, he had another milestone.

Cobbins underwent a shoulder operation after the season that prevented him from even getting to lift while he was still in his protective boot. On Wednesday, for the first time since that surgery, he was able to begin bench pressing again.

“Little things add up to a big thing,” Cobbins said. “I try not to overlook the little things as I keep progressing. I’m liking my progression right now.”

The redshirt senior from Amarillo, Texas, said there haven’t been any major setbacks – with only one instances in which he felt some lingering soreness after one session and took a few days off – and is hoping that he could be back to 100 percent by the time practices begin in the fall.

For now, the next small milestone for Cobbins will come in the form of pads, when he is allowed to play with contact working with team managers – which will hopefully lead to a greater milestone of full contact with his new teammates that are already on campus.

“I haven’t done my first live contact drills yet, but I know we’re getting close to that,” Cobbins said. “I’m just looking forward to getting back out there with my team.”

While Cobbins has been on the mend he said he has still be working with the newcomers – just from a verbal standpoint. And has been getting to know them off the court to begin creating cohesion in the group.

“I’ve been trying to point out things that can help them down the line,” Cobbins said. “Right now, some people might be doing some things that won’t fly in games during the Big 12. So I’ve been pointing out little things like that to help them correct those little mistakes.”
