NCAA Division I Baseball Stillwater Regional: Defense keeps Cowboys rolling

STILLWATER, Okla. —

What’s the last thing people think of when they see a 13-7 final score in baseball?
Defense.
And although Oklahoma State and Cal State Fullerton combined for 31 hits in Game 4 of the NCAA Stillwater Regional, several big defensive plays by the Cowboys kept the Titans from scoring any more runs and may have changed the outcome of the game.
It was most evident in the bottom of the third inning. OSU was in trouble early; Donnie Walton committed an error that allowed Timmy Richards to reach first base, and Jon Perrin followed by hitting batter Clay Williamson, putting two runners on with no outs.
Then, 3,248 people got to witness one of the sport’s rarest occurrences.
Keegan Dale returned a ball to Perrin. CSF’s runners took off, thinking it was going to sail past him.
But Perrin snagged the ball before it could sail past him, threw it to Walton at second, who in turn threw it to Tanner Krietemeier at first.
A 1-6-3 triple play, the type of play folks usually don’t get to see unless it’s on SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays.
“I thought they were going to bunt,” Perrin said. “They didn’t on the first try, so they tried to hit one and it just came to my glove. It’s huge, getting three outs on one pitch. It definitely helped us keep the momentum shift.”
The triple play, OSU’s first since 2012, kept the Titans from returning fire after a three-run inning by the Cowboys. Ultimately, OSU scored five runs in the fifth inning and at least one every inning after en route to its second win of the regional.
Yesterday, it was a stellar throw by Craig McConaughy to first with the bases loaded on a slow, high grounder to get the runner out and escape the jam. Thanks to that play, OSU preserved a two-run lead in what would ultimately become an 8-0 shutout.
