McCurry named finalist for pitcher of the year

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State’s Brendan McCurry is one of three finalists for the 2014 National College Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher of the Year Award, it was announced Friday.

Joining McCurry as finalists are Rice’s Blake Fox and LSU’s Aaron Nola. The Pitcher of the Year Award, sponsored by Diamond, will be presented during the National College Baseball Hall of Fame’s annual Night of Champions on June 28 in Lubbock, Texas.

“Each of these players was instrumental in his team’s regular-season and postseason success,” said Raymond Richardson, Pitcher of the Year Award co-chair. “They maintained their impressive numbers throughout the season, and they’re going to make it difficult to choose a winner.”

McCurry capped his two-year OSU career with a standout senior season as the Cowboys’ closer. The right-hander set a school record with 35 appearances and was 5-0 with 19 saves and a 0.38 ERA. He racked up 54 strikeouts in 41 1/3 innings and allowed just two runs.

The 19 saves shattered the previous school record of 10, and McCurry, a native of Tupelo, also set the program’s career saves mark with 27.

A consensus All-America, McCurry is the 22nd player in OSU baseball history to earn first-team All-America honors. He was the NCBWA District VI Co-Player of the Year and an All-Big 12 First Team honoree and is also one of five finalists for NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award.
