Donohoe returns to gym, returning to form

STILLWATER, Okla. — As the saying goes, shooter’s gotta shoot.

Perhaps lost on some shooters is that fact that it’s not just shooting in games, but also in practice — and beyond.

According to Oklahoma State women’s basketball coach Jim Littell, junior sharpshooter Liz Donohoe lost track of that.

It wasn’t until recently that the former Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year and two-time honorable mention All-Big 12 player found her groove again, and Littell attributes that to one thing.

“She’s gotten back in the gym. She’s putting in a lot of time in the gym on her shot,” Littell said. “We’ve always had the idea that if you struggle, you’ve got to work your way out of it. ... If you’re a shooter, you get in there and work on that. I think her work ethic has helped her regain some of her confidence.”

Donohoe had been wildly inconsistent through the first half of the Big 12 season, averaging 6.8 points per game in the first nine league games — and only wracking up two double-digit scoring games after opening league play with a 17-point barrage against Texas.

In her past four games, Donohoe is averaging 13.75 points and most recently led the Cowgirls to a 73-57 Bedlam win Sunday at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Edmond native picked up her seventh double-double of the year — and her third in conference play — with a game high 15 points and 11 rebounds. She also had zero turnovers, two assists and two steals.

“She’s coming back a little bit. When Liz rebounds, her numbers take care of themselves,” Littell said. “I thought she was relentless on the offensive boards and got a lot of (buckets) from that in the first half and gave us second chance points.”

Donohoe got her 15 points not through her normal game though. Instead of knocking down 3-pointers — as she only made 1 of 5 attempts — she crashed the offensive board, finishing with six offensive rebounds, to pace the Cowgirls, who finish with 34 points int he paint.

The 6-foot junior forward will now get a chance to rectify a struggling performance against one of the top teams in the league Wednesday with OSU travels to face West Virginia, which is second in the Big 12 standings behind Baylor. When the Mountaineers came to Stillwater, Donohoe was 2 for 8 from the field with seven points and five rebounds.

“When she plays like this we’re not surprised, but we’re always thankful when she does,” senior point guard Tiffany Bias said. “She always shoots well in practice, so we always think she’s in a groove. It’s looking good and I think she’s mentally prepared for every other game from here on out.”

The 6 p.m. tipoff can be heard on radio at 105.5 FM in Stillwater.
