Oklahoma State University quarterback Wes Lunt will transfer

STILLWATER, Okla. — Fans got a glimpse into the Oklahoma State quarterback situation Mike Gundy likely didn’t want to expose until next season.

On Thursday, sophomore quarterback Wes Lunt announced through a release by OSU of his intentions to transfer from the program.

“We appreciate Wes and we thank him for everything he has done,” Gundy said in the release. “He’s leaving on good terms and is making this decision based on what he thinks is best for his future.”

The news gave insight into a quarterback situation that Gundy had made clear following the spring game in April that he would not address until after the season opener against Mississippi State at Houston’s Reliant Stadium. It now makes it known that either senior Clint Chelf or redshirt sophomore J.W. Walsh are in line for the starting nod, with the likely candidate being Chelf after leading OSU at the end of last season — which was capped with the Most Valuable Player trophy at the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

Lunt was part of a three-man quarterback competition at Oklahoma State this spring with Chelf and Walsh. At the spring game, Lunt split snaps with Walsh on the White squad while Chelf led the Orange squad — which won the spring finale 17-7. Lunt completed 15 of 27 passes for 122 yards with no touchdowns and an interception, while Walsh went 13 for 23 with 123 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

In March, the subject of possibly redshirting next season was broached to the Springfield, Ill., native who graduated high school a semester early in order to join the Cowboy program and he appeared at the time to have no qualms with the idea. If Lunt transfers to another Division I program, he will have to sit out a year by NCAA regulations.

Lunt started five games for the Cowboys as a true freshman in 2012 and was OSU’s first true freshman opening-day starter at quarterback since at least 1950. Injuries derailed his season, but he still finished with 81 completions in 131 attempts for 1,108 yards with six touchdowns and seven interceptions.

“This was not a decision I took lightly, but it is a decision that I felt was right for me,” Lunt said. “I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to the entire Oklahoma State University community. Specifically, I would like to thank the coaches, players and the whole OSU football family. I wish the Cowboys the best of luck in the future.”

Lunt’s departure leaves on opening now for the third-string quarterback on the depth chart. The likely filler will be sophomore Daxx Garman, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound transfer from Arizona who sat out last year due to NCAA transfer rules. Garman spelled Chelf on just a few drives during the spring game.
