OSU's Kipchirchir takes second In NCAA 10,000 Meters

EUGENE, Ore. — Oklahoma State's Shadrack Kipchirchir took second place in the 10,000 meters, on day one of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, in Eugene, Ore., on Wednesday.

Kipchirchir was part of a group of four runners, which took a large lead early in the race, and only extended it as the race went on. On the final lap, Kipchirchir (28:32.31) and Oregon's Edward Cheserek broke away from the other two runners, and Kipchirchir took second.

"It was an awesome day for Shadrack and for our program," OSU coach Dave Smith said. "I am really excited for him and proud of him. He is such a great young man and a true Cowboy, through and through. He is also a great competitor. The first thing he said after the race was that he feels great and is ready for the 5,000. I'm ready, too."

Kipchirchir is OSU's fourth All-American in the last five years in the 10,000 meters. He also collected a valuable eight team points for the Cowboys. He will have a chance to add to that total in Friday's 5,000 meter final.

Through one day of competition, Oklahoma State is in fourth place in team scoring with Kipchirchir's eight points.

John Teeters ran a 10.35 in heat two of the men's 100 meter dash semifinals. Teeters' performance was enough to earn honorable mention All-American status, making him the first Cowboy in school history to be an All-American in the outdoor 100 meter dash.

OSU track & field returns to action in Eugene Thursday, as Nick Miller competes in the hammer throw, the event in which he is ranked No. 1 in the nation.
