Christmas hoop dreams: Enid High Pacers basketball team purchases, wraps gifts for family with 4 kids

ENID, Okla. — Enid High School girls basketball players are trying to make Christmas a little merrier for one family.

Members of the Pacers team have purchased gifts for the family and will deliver them in time for Christmas.

This is the second year the team has done a project like this, and senior Grace Enmeier said her teammates enjoy giving back to a community that supports them.

“I think we need to help ... out more,” she said Friday. “As a team, we purchased gifts for an underprivileged family in Enid Public Schools. We split up and bought gifts for them.”

The family of six includes four children — two in elementary school, one who is 2 years old and one who is 8 months old, Enmeier said.

“We bought a lot of things they needed, including clothes, coats and gloves,” she said. “We also bought them some toys.”

Enmeier said she was inspired by her parents, Martie Oyler and Troy Enmeier, and their community service to approach her coach, Robb Mills, with the idea. They talked with principals of Enid schools to help find a family to help.

Although she’s a senior, Enmeier is confident the spirit of giving will continue after she graduates.

“The team will keep doing it,” she said. “It may be something different each year, but they will do something.”

  • Smartphone kill switches are coming

Smartphones need kill switches. It's a relatively easy solution to the pricey (and irritating) problem of smartphone theft. But who would have thought that the big carriers would team up with Apple, Google, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung and lots of other manufacturers to voluntarily begin adding the technology by July 2015? The cooperative spirit! It makes so much sense!

  • Why do wolves howl?

Of all the myths that dog the wolf, none is more widely accepted than the idea that wolves howl at the moon. Images of wolves with their heads upturned, singing at the night sky, are as unquestioned as a goldfish's three-second memory or a dog's color-blindness (both also myths).
