Saturday’s quake strongest yet in area

A 3.6 magnitude earthquake early Saturday morning was the strongest ever recorded in a seismically active area north of Enid.

According to a review of data from the United States Geological Survey, the tremor happened at about 4:39 a.m. just north of the Garfield County town of Kremlin. Its epicenter was roughly 13 miles north of Enid; at least one person in Edmond reported on the USGS website that they felt it.

The area around Enid only recently has become active. Data show only a handful of quakes within a 25-mile radius before this time last year. Then on May 19, 2013, a small tremor hit near Medford and the Earth quickly rattled off 31 more temblors before the end of the year.

Since Jan. 1, there have been 57 more in the area surrounding Enid.

Kremlin especially has been shaky, but several 4.0 magnitude earthquakes have hit nearer to Crescent, southeast of Enid.
