AND, STILL THE WATERS RUN: Taking a step back in time

Tetik’s barn dances provide old-fashioned family fun

STILLWATER, Okla. — In the rolling hills west of Lake Carl Blackwell, Frontier Road leads to old-fashioned family fun at the Tetik’s Country Barn. Don and Betty Tetik open their barn each month for dancing with children welcome in a no alcohol or tobacco environment. Partners are not needed in some of the dances and many guests rotate with different people – from line dancing and swing to a two-steppin’ good time.

The July dance is Saturday with a potluck meal served at 7 p.m.

“Bring a dish to share and we all gather to eat before dancing,” said Betty Tetik. “Dancing usually starts about 7:30 p.m.”

Next month, the dance is scheduled Aug. 2 and features the Tetik Country Barn annual ice cream social.

“We have several different kinds of ice cream – all homemade – for the August dance,” she said.

Dancers eat, chatter, dance, eat again and visit some more. All ages are welcome with casual or country western clothes and jeans acceptable attire.

The Tetiks built the barn about 15 years ago with the idea of a carpentry workshop for Don and more space for their growing family as their four children started bringing home all the grandchildren. They have raised cattle on the 160 acres for more than 52 years.

With a great wooden floor, the monthly dances evolved after the Bohemian Hall burned down in nearby Perry. The Tetiks had taught dance lessons there and missed the fellowship of the dancers. Along with hosting the monthly dances, the Tetiks rent the facility as a bed and breakfast for other gatherings such as weddings and reunions.  The grand room, decorated with generational collections of quilts and farm implements, accommodates around 120 guests with three bedrooms in an upstairs loft. Guests can use the entertainment center offering TV, pingpong and pool tables, table games and puzzles.

“Western weddings have been popular through the years,” she said. “It’s just a great place to have parties.”

The Tetiks said they enjoy the gatherings as they start to slow down. Don retired from Ditch Witch after more than 43 years and Betty retired from operating her own day care center. They let other dancers teach the lessons nowadays, sitting back to spin the music – with a waltz now and then after a fiery Oklahoma sunset crosses the golden prairie.
