Tequila Songbirds celebrating at Eskimo Joe's 39th Birthday

Cowboy Country Acoustic Night features Red Dirt musicians

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Tequila Songbirds, musical sisters who gang up every now and again to share tunes and shoot the breeze will entertain at Cowboy Country Acoustic Night celebrating Eskimo Joe’s 39th Anniversary. Their performance follows the Coaches versus Cancer Celebrity Waiter Night from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday with Eskimo Joe, Buffy, Pistol Pete, various OSU coaches, former players and some very little heroes - kids battling cancer participating with photos and autographs. The Red Dirt acoustic music night also features Chad Sullins, Brad Jackson and the Red Dirt Rangers.

“The Tequila Songbirds are excited to be included,” said Ali Harter.

She is part of the Oklahoma supergroup, a rotating door of women including but not limited to Harter, Kierston White, Elizabeth Forsythe, Kaitlin Butts, Camille Harp, Samantha Crain, Sherree Chamberlain, Carly Gwin, Carter Sampson, Melissa Hembree, Chelsea Cope, Susan Herndon, Lauren Deger and Tracy Reed.

The group started at a Norman Mexican restaurant that hosted a song swap where they were paid in tips and tequila. All of them had built names for themselves with their own original music but they learned each other’s songs, sometimes adding four-part harmonies.

“We came together – and people started to notice,” said Ali Harter. “We all started hanging out and became best friends.”

Harter is not kidding about becoming best friends with sleepovers and cookouts part of making music together. Although they play together, each individual has had success on their own.

She has two recorded CDs to her credit, “Worry the Bone” and “No Bees, No Honey.”  Two of her songs were featured on the popular television show Grey’s Anatomy.

The group rotates musicians sometimes as they all have individual engagements still. White just recorded her debut album, “Don’t Write Love Songs.” Forsythe and Butts will join Harter and White for the Eskimo Joe’s set. Butts said it’s a great venue with the best hospitality. Her first studio album with Mike McClure is a work in progress.

“Since we have a fiddle player - Eliza B - we can fit in with country. She’s back performing after taking her MCAT,” Harter said with the Red Dirt music scene welcoming them. “We play just about anything we can make noise with and we’re hoping to record together soon.”

A live recording in a popular local venue is the next step for the Tequila Songbirds because “that’s just who we are – playing live - performers connecting with an audience,” Harter said. “It’s the purest form of music – loving and sharing songs together.”
