UPDATE: Cushing man's shooting death investigated

PERKINS, Okla. — Investigators have yet to determine the cause and manner of a 27-year-old Cushing man's death. The man died after a traffic stop in Payne County Tuesday night.

According to a report by Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Clinton Craig Blakely was found with a gunshot wound to the head after officers shot out his tires following a pursuit. He died at Stillwater Medical Center.

The report states the death is possibly a suicide and officers found a gun in the pickup's cab.

Public Information Officer for OSBI Jessica Brown said it is not yet known if the wound came from the found weapon or a law enforcement gun.

Brown said investigators are waiting for the medical examiner to offically determine how Blakely died.

According to a report by OSBI, a Payne County sheriff's deputy tried to stop a pickup driven by Blakely at approximately 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on State Highway 33, five miles east of Perkins. The deputy saw the pickup run a red light.

The pickup driver refused to stop. The deputy and a Perkins police officer attempted a road block. The vehicle slowed and officers commanded the driver get out of the pickup. The driver, then drove toward the deputy, who fire several shots at the pickup's tires, according to the OSBI report. The shots stopped the vehicle.

When officers approached the pickup, they noticed the driver, identified as Blakely, had sustained a gunshot wound to the head, investigators said.
