OUR VIEW: Mobile SNAP app convenient

STILLWATER, Okla. — Did you notice that high winds had knocked over some construction barricades and blown them into the road? Get your smartphone out, take a picture and let the city of Stillwater know about it.

The city of Stillwater is keeping pace with today’s technology with the roll-out of a mobile app residents can use to report problems they notice around town.

The free mobile SNAP app is a smart move. It makes it more convenient for residents throughout the city to report problems via the Stillwater Needs Assistance Program.

The SNAP initiative has been a big success since it was introduced by the city on its website in 2012. Residents have used the web-based form nearly 2,700 times to post a report. The city has received online notifications on an array of issues, including inoperable traffic signals and rough road conditions.

According to city officials, crews have responded and resolved more than 2,590 of those issues reported by the public.

With the convenience of the mobile SNAP app, city officials are expecting an increase in public participation. Residents will now be able to see and report a problem immediately on their smartphone without having to wait to get access to a computer. A version is also being developed for Android devices.

The technology also allows users to enter an email address for notifications on the progress of their reports from their smartphones.

SNAP has proven to be a useful tool residents can use to alert problems and issues to city staff, and the new mobile app will make that process more convenient.
