OUR VIEW: Take part in Boomer Blast

STILLWATER, Okla. — An annual summer tradition will happen again in Stillwater on Friday as the city hosts the Boomer Blast Fireworks Show at Boomer Lake, located at Lakeview Road and Washington Street.

Parking lots will open at 6:30 p.m. and the fireworks show will start about 9:35 p.m.

Residents also are encouraged to participate in the 17th annual Family Fishing Tournament. The action begins at 6 a.m. Friday at Boomer Lake’s south boat ramp.

Registration begins at 5:30 a.m.

Teams of up to four family members will be competing in boat and non-boat categories.

Oklahoma’s summer weather can be finicky, but Friday’s forecast looks good – a high of 92 degrees with a southeast wind at 15 mph and only a 10 percent chance of rain.

Those seem to be perfect weather conditions to spend the day and night at Boomer Lake.

But in the event of a rainout, the fireworks show will be on Saturday night or delayed until the fall.

Community sponsors play a big role in keeping Boomer Blast going each year. Last year, local businesses and residents donated more than $18,000 to keep the tradition alive.

Get your fishing gear out of the garage and sign up for the early morning fishing tournament. Who knows? Your family might just walk away with the championship trophy.

Then get your lawn chairs and blankets out and get ready to enjoy the free fireworks show Friday night.

It will be a fun day – and night – at the lake, and a good way to celebrate Independence Day.
