'Walk to Emmaus' potluck dinner at Lost Creek United Methodist Church

STILLWATER, Okla. — Lost Creek United Methodist Church, 8002 S. Washington St., is hosting a potluck dinner at 12:15 p.m. Sunday for those interested in learning more about the Emmaus Movement or have been on the “Walk to Emmaus.”

The “Walk to Emmaus” is a 72-hour experience that takes a New Testament look at Christianity as a lifestyle. It is a highly structured weekend designed to strengthen and renew the faith of Christian people, and through them their families, congregations and the world in which they live. Each person goes through the experience once.

Emmaus is an ecumenical movement and is a combined effort of laity and clergy toward the renewal of the church. The objective of Emmaus is to inspire, challenge and equip local church members for Christian action in their homes, churches, and workplace.

The Emmaus movement is a worldwide movement. Locally, congregations in the Stillwater area participate in Pioneer Country Emmaus Community, centered in Oklahoma City. The next Pioneer Country Walks are scheduled for July 8-11 for men and July 22-25 for women at New Covenant United Methodist Church in Edmond. Through Lost Creek United Methodist Church, more than 100 people have participated in “The Walk to Emmaus.” After going on the initial walk, many have gone back to serve on other walks and remain active in many aspects of the Emmaus movement.

Besides the “Walk to Emmaus” weekend, Emmaus members are encouraged to attend monthly gatherings held the third Saturday night of each month at churches across the Oklahoma City area. Lost Creek annually hosts the August gathering. A gathering features a time of food and fellowship, followed by a worship service. Another aspect of the “Walk to Emmaus” is participation in a weekly reunion group. This accountability group is a small group of people who meet to examine their Christian call to discipleship during the past week. 

Chrysalis is the youth version of “The Walk to Emmaus.” The Chrysalis Flights are open to young people who have finished their freshmen through senior year of high school. The first Pioneer Country Chrysalis Flights will take place this June at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Bethany. 

Kairos is another ministry of the Emmaus movement. Kairos takes the “Walk to Emmaus” weekend inside prisons across the country. Thousands of dozens of homemade cookies are distributed at each Kairos weekend.
