STILLWATER, Okla. — How well local kids know their Bible will be put to the test Aug. 28 when a Bible Bee is held at Eagle Heights Baptist Church in Stillwater and hosted by Hillcrest Baptist Church. Those who qualify at this stage will go on to compete at the national Bible Bee Nov. 11-13 in Schaumburg, Ill.

Stephanie Weckler’s daughter, Karen Weckler, 9, placed high enough in the local competition last year to compete at nationals in Washington, D.C.

Karen Weckler and Rachel Gosz, 12, were the only two from the area to go on to the national level. About 5,900 kids ages 7 to 18 are participating nationwide this year.

“The Bible Bee is unlike other academic competitions. It’s not just an exercise in cramming facts and words into the brain in order to recite them on demand,” Stephanie Weckler said. “Studying and memorizing the Bible has the power to change lives.”

The competition involves scripture memorization and in-depth understanding of lessons from specific Bible passages.

Registration is open until June 30 and costs $25. This includes registration, a Bible, T-shirt, button, curriculum materials, Bible verse cards, family devotional guide and rule book. Visit for information or to register, donate or volunteer.
