Cooks are getting desserts ready for Boots and Bandanas fundraiser

STILLWATER, Okla. — Guests at Central Oklahoma Community Action Agency’s Boots and Bandanas will have the chance to bid on desserts from an Oklahoma State University coach’s wives, a former OSU first lady, a Payne County commissioner, a state legislator and other Stillwater notables.

Those on the hook for providing a dessert for the fundraiser include Kristen Gundy and Cheryl Martin, who are working together on an item; Shelley Budke; Ann Halligan; Lee Denney; Heather Ford; Robbie Holder; and Gloria Hesser, who will make the Italian cream cake she often makes for charitable events.

Hesser, who also serves on the COCAA board, makes the Italian cream cake for the COCAA event each year, for Altrusa International of Stillwater’s annual lunch and fashion show and for the annual Home and Community Education cake and bread show.

“Once upon a time, I had a lady pay me to make one for her family,” Hesser said.

She’s been involved with Boots and Bandanas since the beginning, she said, when it was a rodeo.

“It was a lot of work,” she said. “We only did that one year, then went to a dinner.”

The event kicks off with a preview of donated items, followed by a barbecue dinner and the live auction. Others donating desserts for the auction are Elizabeth Carver-Cyr, Dorothy Johnson, Julie Lauvetz, Marge McMillian, Deborah Green, Mary Emde, Shannon Williams, Dwight Hammon and Linda Hatfield.

McMillian, who is planning to make chocolate chip cookies, said she doesn’t know how long she’s been participating in Boots and Bandanas.

“Suzanne (Carpenter) called me five or six years ago and asked and I gladly said yes,” McMillian said. “Those people do such a good job and work hard.”

COCAA serves several counties, but the money raised at Boots and Bandanas will stay in Payne County, Hesser said. She is secretary of the board.

In Stillwater, COCAA operates the Mission of Hope Homeless Shelter and Stillwater Community Health Center. It also offers family support services and helps families in need with food and utility and rental assistance.

“It does a lot of good for a lot of people,” Hesser said.

Last year, the agency received stimulus money, she said, and work on those projects is going well, but when that money is gone, it’s gone, and there is no more.

She gives credit to auctioneer Charlie Kaupke for the amount of money Boots and Bandanas raises.

“I don’t think another auctioneer would get what he gets for stuff,” she said.

The auction will also include a luncheon for up to 16 by Toni Stone and Ladies; a luncheon for eight from Joseppi’s; dinner from The Hideaway; a private wine tasting for eight from Zannotti’s Wine Bar; a gourmet dinner from Stillwater Country Club; a tower of candy from John Horn; and a package of entrees and drinks from Louie’s.

The eighth annual Boots and Bandanas will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 26 at White Barn Pavilion. Dinner tickets are $60 or $450 for a table of eight. Reservations are due Thursday. RSVP forms and information are available at the COCAA office, 410 S. Lewis, 405-624-2533.
