Concerts in the garden series to begin Friday

There’s much more than plants and beautiful landscapes at The Botanic Garden at Oklahoma State University.

Music will soon be in the air at TBG as we gear up for our Spring Concert Series.

We initiated the concert series for the first time last fall and it was a huge success, so we’re doing them again. Spring concert dates featuring a variety of local and regional artists are Friday, May 9 and May 16 and will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Be sure to keep the fall in mind as well because we’ll do another concert series then.

Friday will be Moe Towne Alex and the Night View Band. May 9 will feature a jazz ensemble.

And for those who have been around Stillwater for a while, you’ll be excited to attend the concert series May 16 featuring country band The Red Dirt Rangers. All of the spring concerts are free and open to the public.

Botanic Gardens nurture the physical and emotional well-being of visitors through their unique environments. Through an outdoor music series, we aim to connect one of Stillwater’s most celebrated features with music in the environment that inspired many of its artists.

We use a variety of events to draw the public out to and give them an opportunity to experience TBG.

It can be such a tranquil place, a place for meditation, a place of reflection and a place of enjoyment.

This concert series is a great way to end the work week on a positive note with some wonderful musical entertainment.

Bring a picnic, throw down a blanket or bring your lawn chairs and enjoy live music among the flowers. Evenings are a magical time in the gardens. Come relax in the great outdoors with friends and family. There will be limited snacks and non-alcoholic beverages available for purchase. In addition, there will be a few select plants and shrubs available for sale.

Proceeds from the plant sale will help support activities at TBG at OSU, such as the concert series and other events.

Kim Toscano is assistant extension specialist and host of the OETA television program Oklahoma Gardening, which airs at 11 a.m. Saturdays and 3:30 p.m. Sundays, and assistant director of The Botanic Garden at Oklahoma State University.

Quercus is the Latin name for oak. It is a quirky name; some believe its roots came from the Celtic word for “fine tree.” Anyone familiar with oaks knows they are indeed fine trees.

Roses are a beautiful addition to any garden and landscape. They come in a variety of colors that enhance your yard. However, like other plants, roses are susceptible to disease. One that seems to hit roses the hardest is rose rosette disease caused by the rose rosette virus.

Mulch is full of purpose. What it lacks in mystery, it makes up in function. Mulch contributes to healthy gardens. No one ponders or debates it, yet many do not take the time to mulch.

If you have no space outdoors for a garden, don’t despair because you can still grow something consumable. Bean sprouts are the easiest and fastest crop to grow.

“Where’s the relief?” That is what I’ve been thinking all week in the garden. I water, wondering if the mist is going to cool or cook the plants. I assumed the last thing anyone would consider this week is planting — anything!

Sometimes it can be hard to step out of your comfort zone. This is true for clothing selection, restaurant choices and even the types of plants and shrubs you put in your landscape.
