Grow! 04-13-14

Family Day in the Garden set April 19

Fresh air! The great outdoors!

Spending time together as a family! Getting a little dirt under your fingernails!

These are just a few of the benefits of taking part in Family Day in the Garden, slated 9 a.m. to noon April 19 at The Botanic Garden at Oklahoma State University.

We love to have visitors to the garden, and we especially love it when they roll up their sleeves and volunteer their time and energy to making TBG at OSU the best it can be. I’ve heard people refer to the garden as one of the best kept secrets in town.

However, with 40,000 visitors last year, I think the word is getting out.

In addition to seeing all of the sights or taking time to venture around the walking trail, visitors to Family Day in the Garden will have a chance to pitch in, get their hands a little dirty and hopefully learn some information they can use at home.

With the assistance of our knowledgeable staff and The Botanic Garden Ambassadors, you’ll have an opportunity to plant, mulch and prune the plants. It’s our hope you’ll learn some new things that will be beneficial to you in your own garden and landscape.

And after taking a look around at our various theme gardens, you’ll leave with lots of new ideas you can incorporate at home.

Family Day in the Garden is the perfect opportunity to spend quality time outdoors as a family and make a personal investment in one of Stillwater’s premier attractions. We’ll be offering a hands-on experience for visitors of all ages.

We host an open house the first and third Saturday of the month through October and Family Day in the Garden will be held in conjunction with open house. Something new we’re doing this year on the third Saturday of each month is Volunteer Service Day.

I can’t think of a better day to kick off our Service Day than during Family Day in the Garden.

We’d like to invite all service groups and other volunteers to come out and work alongside our staff in the garden.

If you have a group that would like to come out and volunteer, please contact Laura Payne at 405-744-4531. Individuals are invited to take part in any of the Volunteer Service Days.

We’re doing all we can to offer a variety of programs and activities at TBG at OSU to help ensure as many people as possible know about this wonderful place and take advantage of all it has to offer.

One of the great things about coming to TBG at OSU early in the season like this is on subsequent visits, you’ll be able to see how much the garden is growing and changing throughout the season.

So make plans to bring the family and  spend the morning with us April 19.

Kimberly Toscano is assistant extension specialist and host of the OETA television program Oklahoma Gardening, which airs at 11 a.m. Saturdays and 3:30 p.m. Sundays, and assistant director of The Botanic Garden at Oklahoma State University.

Quercus is the Latin name for oak. It is a quirky name; some believe its roots came from the Celtic word for “fine tree.” Anyone familiar with oaks knows they are indeed fine trees.

Roses are a beautiful addition to any garden and landscape. They come in a variety of colors that enhance your yard. However, like other plants, roses are susceptible to disease. One that seems to hit roses the hardest is rose rosette disease caused by the rose rosette virus.

Mulch is full of purpose. What it lacks in mystery, it makes up in function. Mulch contributes to healthy gardens. No one ponders or debates it, yet many do not take the time to mulch.

If you have no space outdoors for a garden, don’t despair because you can still grow something consumable. Bean sprouts are the easiest and fastest crop to grow.

“Where’s the relief?” That is what I’ve been thinking all week in the garden. I water, wondering if the mist is going to cool or cook the plants. I assumed the last thing anyone would consider this week is planting — anything!
