Live Well 04-20-14

Happy Easter! Whether you celebrate this holiday or not, today is a day that symbolizes life.

For some, this day is a celebration of life that comes through the resurrection of Jesus.

For others, it is a day in which life is evidenced through the budding trees and flowers that promises the arrival of spring. The hunting of eggs, the gathering of families over dinner, the gathering of community within a church or park, life is celebrated.

Wellness allows people to celebrate and experience life fully. Wellness is a holistic endeavor – spiritual, mental, physical, and financial wellbeing.

In addition to Easter, this time of the year remembers people who have lost their lives.

Just this past week was the one year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings. Yesterday, Stillwater hosted its eighth annual Remember the Ten Run honoring the 10 lives lost that snowy night in Colorado.

Next week, Oklahoma City will host its Memorial Marathon, remembering the 168 people who were killed in the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing on April 19th, 1995. The Memorial Marathon, Boston Marathon, and the Remember the Ten Run serve as a testimony that good can overcome evil – the very meaning of Easter.

For those of us alive today – reading the newspaper, filling plastic Easter eggs with chocolate candies, cooking a meal, dressing the kids in their Easter best, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus – choose this Easter to not merely be alive, but to actually live.

As a runner, the idea of a race remembering lives lost symbolizes strength, endurance, and overcoming barriers. Take advantage of being alive by taking care of the body you were given.

The CDC recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week to maintain a healthy weight – or 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Examples of moderate activity include walking briskly, yard work, shoveling snow – even in April, actively playing with children, biking and maybe even signing up and training for your first 5k.

Benefits of physical activity reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, several forms of cancer, reduces arthritis pain, and reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety, and others.

In light of Easter and the celebration of life, take care of the body you are in and start to experience life. Live your life to the fullest and be physically active. Join the thousands of other runners and remember the lives lost by beginning to live yours well.

Choose today to live well, choose to be fully alive.
