Beier wins Perry Tournament, still hungry for more

PERRY, Okla. — Perry senior Garrett Beier got a taste of competing at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament last season as he helped the Maroons recapture the state title. This year, Beier hopes to do more than just help his team — he hopes to reach the medal stand.

“I wish I would have placed,” Beier said. “It felt good being a part of it.”

While there is a lot of wrestling to go before the state tournament, Beier turned in a solid performance at the Perry Tournament of Champions Friday and Saturday as he came out on top of the 195-pound weight class.

“I’ve been practicing hard and everything so I can beat people on the mat,” Beier said.

None of Beier’s opponents could touch him as the senior won three matches by fall and one by major decision. In Friday’s first round, Beier defeated Owasso’s Sammy Loos by fall, only a minute into the match. The senior 195-pound wrestler followed with a 9-0 victory in the quarterfinals against Jeremy Morgan from Edmond Memorial. In the semifinals, Beier defeated his teammate Matt Jones with a pin, 46 seconds into the match. In the finals, Beier scored two takedowns and an escape before pinning Muskogee’s Cori Andrews, with a minute remaining in the second period. Beier said his teammates have been a key to his success.

“I just kept wrestling hard,” Beier said. “I got myself in the position, I needed to be in.”

The senior wrestler was a victory away from placing last season at state. Coach Ronnie Delk said Its been a motivating factor for Beier.

“Garrett Beier is tough as nails,” Delk said. “He’s on a mission ... He’s going to have a great year. He is going to be a state champ, no doubt.”

Beier said it was a fun experience winning the state championship as a team last season and hopes to make a bigger impact for a repeat.

“I work hard everyday,” Beier said. “I want to get back and get that state title. My goal is to be an (individual) state champion.”

Perry finished second at the tournament to Stillwater. Before the Maroons dominated their first two duals against Edmond Memorial and Cushing.

“I think we are going to do great dual-wise,” Beier said. “There is a few things we need to fix. We will be fine.”
