STILLWATER — A return home didn’t treat the Stillwater Lady Pioneers well against rival Ponca City.
Playing for the first time at home since opening the season on Dec. 1 against Edmond Santa Fe, Stillwater saw Ponca City score the first 11 points en route to a 46-22 win at Pioneer Fieldhouse for homecoming.
The Lady Pioneers (4-8), who scored just 15 points in a 37-point loss to Bishop McGuinness on Tuesday, were only able to put 9 points on the scoreboard in the first half against the Lady Cats.
Playing their fifth game in eight days, Stillwater had some open looks against Ponca City, they just couldn’t find the range.
“We used so much of our legs last weekend and didn’t quite recover and (Friday) we played good defense, but they came out and hit 8 of their first 10 shots and put us in a hole early,” Stillwater coach Carl Treat said. “We just could not make a bucket and we missed nine free throws. We put ourselves in position on offense, we just couldn’t make a shot.”
Ponca City was able to build at 15-2 lead after one quarter and led 28-9 at halftime.
SHS junior Allison Smith hit two jumpers early in the third quarter, but the Lady Pioneers would get only one more basket the rest of the quarter.
The Lady Cats led by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter.
Emma Gade led the Lady Pioneers with 9 points, hitting a 3-pointer and four free throws. Gade also had 5 rebounds. Smith and Hayley Fort added four points each, with Fort leading SHS with 6 rebounds and Smith adding 3 blocked shots.
The Lady Pioneers committed only 9 turnovers, a season low for the team.
“I can see improvement where we’re handling stuff like the press and things like that now,” Treat said. “We played well in spurts, we’re getting to the point where we’re getting shots, we’re just not making them.”
Mica Havens scored 15 points to lead Ponca City. Emily Berwaldt and Amber Kremeier each added nine points.
The Lady Pioneers return the court next weekend by playing in the Jenks/Union Invitational.
Stillwater will play host Tulsa Union at 7 p.m. on Thursday at UMCAC.
