Stillwater girls beat the buzzer, win 59-56

BIXBY, Okla. — BIXBY – Every second counts. Becca Worthy proved that to be true on Saturday.

Stillwater played Glendale, Ark., in their final game of the Bixby Invitational. The Lady Pioneers held a three possession lead in the fourth quarter. Even though Glendale not only tied the game but took the lead late in the fourth quarter, Stillwater rallied. Worthy hit a 3-pointer to beat the buzzer for a 59-56 victory.

“It was exciting,” Stillwater coach Clay Stephens said. “We were ahead but kind of gave it away but then we regrouped and got it back.”

Lauren Stettnisch dropped in 25 points in the tight-knit win. Worthy scored 12 points, including the 3-pointer to pull-out a victory. Dylan Fix added 11 points. The trio combined to score 48 of the Lady Pioneers’ 59 points on Saturday.

The Lady Pioneers ended a four-game skid in the seventh place game of the Bixby Invitational on Saturday.

Stillwater finished the tournament at 1-2 but met two quality opponents in their first two games. SHS played Class 5A No. 3 East Central and then met up with Class 5A No. 9 Del City.

“Our first two games we played against good teams. Hopefully we learned a little bit about ourselves. Ideally you’d like to win more than you lose but we’re still in the learning process,” Stephens said.

Stillwater has struggled with turnovers and grabbing rebounds. The team is slowly working on getting stronger in both of those areas.

“We didn’t have as many turnovers,” Stephens said. “Overall we played a little better.”


The Pioneers looked to shrug off a loss to Del City on Friday. Stillwater did just that.

SHS played Putnam City in the third place game of the Bixby Invitational on Saturday night. The Pioneers overlooked a rough performance offensively the night before to run away on Putnam City 74-56.

“They bounced back the way they were supposed to,” Stillwater coach Michael Davis said. “I’m real happy that they didn’t let what happened (Friday) come into play (Saturday).”

Carson Teel led the Pioneers with 19 points and six assists. Brett Budke had 13 points and six assists, Jordan Brown chipped in 13 points and grabbed five rebounds, Jared Dickey scored 12 in the win and Jake Green put in seven points and had five assists.

The amount of assists that the Pioneers had on Saturday shows how unselfishly they play.

“We stayed focused throughout,” Davis said.

Teel was named to the All-Tournament team. Teel scored 65 points in the three games.

Stillwater finished the Bixby Invitational with a 2-1 record and came away with the bronze.

“It was a tough tournament,” Davis said. “We had tough competition on our side of it. I won’t complain. It’s about player process to get ready for the big picture in the end.”

The future is bright for the Stillwater Pioneers and Davis knows it.

“We can only go one way and that’s up. We’ve got to get better everyday. That’s our goal,” Davis said.
