Lady Bluejackets fall short of Mulhall-Orlando title

MULHALL, Okla. — Basketball is a game that can easily be decided by runs. Coyle started on a great run but ended on a rough one.

Coyle and Deer Creek-Lamont squared off in the finals of the Mulhall-Orlando Invitational Saturday night. Coyle led for much of the game but the Lady Eagles rallied. Coyle had to settle for runners-up following the 39-33 overtime loss.

“If we would’ve made shots that normally fall then it probably would’ve been a different ball game,” Coyle coach Tom Webb said.

The Lady Bluejackets held a comfortable 10-2 lead after the first eight minutes. But Deer Creek-Lamont did not give up. Coyle’s lead was cut to four at halftime.

The ending of the third quarter went back and forth as the teams exchanged leads.

Coyle had a tough time in the closing minutes of the game after scoring just five points in the final quarter of regulation and just a single 3-pointer in the overtime period.

The Lady Eagles had a chance to end the game in regulation with the ball and 3.7 seconds to play. DCLA’s Abby Webster missed a long trey at the buzzer.

In overtime it was all Deer Creek-Lamont. The Lady Eagles outscored Coyle 9-3 in the overtime period.

Coyle’s Tyra Aska led the Lady Bluejackets with 15 points. Shilah Young added nine in the loss.

Coyle aims to put this loss in the past and learn from its mistakes to prepare for the future.

“This bunch is really good about coming back. They’re mad but it’s not going to bother them,” Webb said.

The Lady Bluejackets finished the tournament at 2-1. Coyle feels as though the tournament was a success. Four years ago, Coyle did not win a game in the tournament. The last two years, the Lady Bluejackets were the consolation champs. This year, Coyle pushed farther than it ever had to become the runners-up.

“It’s all good,” Webb said.
