Stillwater High boys finish third; Lady Pioneers lose

ADA, Okla. — Stillwater was without Dylan Fix on Saturday afternoon against Newcastle. Fix’s absence was noticeable.

Stillwater fell 48-40 to Newcastle in the consolation finals of the East Central Oklahoma Classic in Ada.

“We dig ourselves a hole by turning the ball over too many times,” Stillwater coach Clay Stephens said.

The Lady Pioneers had one glaring statistic in the game, turnovers. Stillwater turned the basketball over 28 times, a number that in Stephens mind is entirely too high.

“When you do that you don’t give yourself a chance,” Stephens said. “In a game you lose by eight points and you have 28 turnovers, it’s obvious that’s the problem.”

Lauren Stettnisch scored a game-high 21 points. Stettnisch also was named to the All-Tournament team. Stettnisch scored 56 points in the tournament.

“(Stettnisch) had a good tournament for us,” Stephens said. “She’s been playing well. We need to do a better job at getting her the ball.”

Becca Worthy chipped in nine points in the losing cause.

Fix did not play as an ankle injury kept her out of the game. Stillwater hopes to have Fix back by the time Enid comes to Stillwater on Tuesday.

“Her absence was big for us,” Stephens said. “We hope (Fix is ready for Tuesday) but we are going to let the trainer decide.”

Stillwater finished the tournament 1-2. The Lady Pioneers are 5-6 following the loss.

“When teams really get on us with a little intensity we struggle with that,” Stephens said.

Stillwater boys 82, Durant 56

When Stillwater is playing unselfish basketball, it can be tough to stop.

During the third-place game of the East Central Oklahoma Classic Saturday night, the Pioneers handily beat Durant 82-56.

Stillwater’s Carson Teel scored a whopping 66 points in the three-game tournament. Teel’s performance earned him a spot on the All-Tournament team.

SHS aims at playing unselfish basketball every night. That is exactly what the Pioneers did Saturday night, the outcome was a 26 point blowout.

“We played total team basketball (Saturday),” Stillwater coach Michael Davis said.

Jared Dickey scored 16 points and Brett Budke dropped in 10 points in the one-sided victory.

No. 12 ranked Stillwater moved up to 7-4 after the victory.

The Pioneers have played just one of their 11 games so far in their own gym. Stillwater could not be happier about the upcoming week. SHS will host Enid Tuesday night and will remain at home for Friday night’s game against Bartlesville.
