Coyle hunting for first district championship

COYLE, Okla. — The Coyle Bluejackets enter Friday’s game against the South Coffeyville Lions hoping to do more than improve their playoff positioning. They are hoping to make school history.

“A victory would give us an 8-2 record on the season and 8-1 in district,” coach Shane Weathers said. “That would be Coyle’s best finish in a season.”

Coyle (7-2, 7-1) is on a six-game winning streak and have held its opponents to just six points. A victory on Friday could give the Bluejackets their first district title in school history if Woodland can beat Rejoice Christian to create a three-way tie. Weathers said his team is using the week to prepare for both the Lions and the playoffs.

“We are working on some of the things we do well and looking at our weaknesses,” Weathers said. “We are trying to make ourselves a better football team.”

The Lions (5-4, 4-4) have lost three straight, being outscored 156-24. Weathers said his team needs to strike quick.

“We want to get this game out of hand by halftime,” Weathers said. “We need to make them one dimensional and our defense needs to continue to play aggressive.”

A victory of 15 or more points for Coyle would ensure it of winning a tiebreaker by margin of victory if Woodland forces the three-way tie.
