Pioneers roll to 9-0 district victory over Sand Springs

STILLWATER, Okla. — Stillwater’s second home game of the season was without a doubt successful.

The Pioneers hosted Sand Springs in the first of a home-and-home district matchup on Thursday night. Stillwater put on a show for its home fans with a 9-0 shutout.

“In a district game, 15 hits, a shutout, what more can you ask for,” Stillwater junior Brooks Zimmerman said.

Stillwater’s Carson Teel went the distance on the bump. Teel, Oklahoma State signee, allowed four hits and struck out four Sandites. Teel threw a seven-inning shutout for the Pioneers.

“I trust (my defense) everyday I go out there. I don’t care if I have the worst throwing day in my life or the best one. I know that my defense is going to be there to back me up and I’ll do everything to help them out,” Teel said.

Jon Littell, Oklahoma State signee, was strong at the plate going 4 for 4 with a double, two singles and a walk. Littell also added two RBIs to his stat sheet.

“(Littell) is one of the best players in Oklahoma and one of the best athletes in the country. He showed why,” Stillwater coach Jimmy Harris said.

Brooks Zimmerman also had a great day swinging the bat with a 4 for 4 outing with three singles, a double and two RBIs.

“I just had the mindset to go to right center field today because the win was blowing in really hard from left field. I just wanted to keep my hands inside the ball and drive it hard the other way,” Zimmerman said. “We’re playing really well right now. We’re putting everything together.”

Stillwater (13-1, 5-0) pushed its winning streak to 12 games in a row. The Pioneers are feeling strong about the way they are playing as of late.

“We’re playing loose. Sometimes I make it hard to play loose because I’m on them a little bit but they main thing is they play loose, that’s good,” Harris said.

Littell picked up a walk in the bottom of the first inning to get to first. Littell stole second base. Zimmerman stepped up to the plate and hit a high ball that looked like it would be a routine flyball but Sand Springs was unable to make a play as the ball hit the grass. Littell rounded third base and went home for a 1-0 Stillwater lead after one inning.

The Pioneers added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning when Tyler Burnett hit a sacrifice flyout to right field to allow Zimmerman to tag up and score. The Pioneers’ second run of the inning came off of a bad pitch as Will Fowler crossed the plate.

Stillwater got things going in the fourth with three runs on four hits. Stillwater’s T.J. Black, Littell and Zimmerman were hit home to extend the Pioneer lead to 6-0.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth Littell was able to find a hole in left and center field to bring in Ryan Hoecker and Teel for an 8-0 lead.

Stillwater could not get the run-rule but did earn its ninth run of the contest with Cornforth crossing the plate to take a 9-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Sand Springs went three up and three down to end the game in the top of the seventh inning.

“I’m proud the way we played,” Harris said.

Stillwater will go to Sand Springs at 5 p.m. Friday to finish off the district series.
