Lady Pioneer soccer still searching for first win of season

STILLWATER, Okla. — After playing competitively with No. 2 Jenks Tuesday, the Stillwater Lady Pioneers soccer team was hoping to build on that performance against the Sapulpa Lady Chieftains. Friday at Pioneer Stadium, the Lady Pioneers fell behind early and didn’t regroup in a 5-1 loss.

“I think everyone was off tonight,” coach Joey Parker said. “We had poor touch on the ball. We didn’t have good distribution on the ball. ... Came out in defensive mode, got scored on quick and after that things fell apart.”

It only took Sapulpa (4-5, 1-1) two minutes and 23 seconds to take a 1-0 lead. Morgan Medina kicked it in from just outside the goalie box. Ten minutes later, the Lady Chieftains crowded the Stillwater net on a corner kick and poked one in. With 14:36 left, the Lady Chieftains expanded their lead to three on a goal by Cadence Duke.

Monica Breivik started at goalie for Stillwater. Parker said Breivik played well but wished her teammates would have helped her out.

“I think a lot of pressure is put on Monica through poor decisions by the team as whole,” Parker said. “...I’m proud of Monica, she stepped up and is taking on the spot.”

The second half started much like the first. Medina sprinted past the Stillwater defense and scored her second goal less than two minutes into the second half.

The Lady Pioneers (0-8, 0-2) hardly got the ball in the Sapulpa zone in the first half. Stillwater got several shots at the Lady Chieftains’ goal early in the second half. Hannah Grant got the Lady Pioneers on the board with 19:40 left.

“You got to be aggressive as soon as the whistle blows in the first half,” Parker said. “You have to play together as a team. You get down by one goal, you have to be able to come back and get that goal back.”

It doesn’t get easier for Stillwater as it will host No. 1 Union at 6 p.m. Tuesday.  “They will be quality like Jenks,” Parker said. “... We will go back to the drawing board and start again and prepare for Union.”
