Reese's three touchdowns lift Demons

PERKINS, Okla. — The Perkins-Tryon Demons had the opening game against Jones circled on their calendar. Thanks to the performance of starting quarterback Shelby Reese, P-T pulled out a 23-14 victory.

“It was a big win,” Reese said. “We always look forward to that game. It’s a good one for our fans too. We played hard.”

On Sept. 6 in Jones, Reese was a one-man wrecking crew. In the second quarter, he turned the game with a fake punt that resulted in a 62-yard rush — setting up the Demons’ first touchdown.

“It was a good call,” Reese said. “Our guys did a good job blocking and I found a whole and ran.”

The game was Reese’s first as the starting quarterback. Coach Lloyd Wertman was impressed with his performance.

“Shelby played outstanding,” Wertman said. “We only needed two yards on fourth down and he got us 62.”

Reese scored all three of the Demons touchdowns on two 1-yard runs and one from 6 yards. The quarterback said some of the credit goes to his teammates especially ones in the backfield with him.

“(Running backs) Tyler (Taff), Jacob (Peyton) and Clark (Crotty) got us down there,” Reese said. “Coach just wanted me to punch it in.”

Reese said it was amazing to win his first game as a starting quarterback especially against a solid team like Jones.

“It feels good to lead our team to a win like that,” Reese said. “We are a band of brothers. We don’t separate or fight with each other.”

Reese said the win was nice but the P-T D’s still have plenty to prove this season — starting with Friday’s game at McLoud.

“We are looking forward to who we have this week and looking to get another win,” Reese said. “McLoud is going to be tough. I feel like our defense is going to be ready and our offense will be ready for their defense.”
