State qualifiers Perry and Frontier have several first-teamers

STILLWATER, Okla. — The 2012 All-Area Softball team features nine athletes that played on either Frontier or Perry’s state qualifying team. Seven of the athletes that were first-team or honorable mentions competed in regionals. Frontier had the most representation with four athletes and coach Erron Kauk. The Lady Maroons had five representatives from their state qualifying team including player of the year, senior pitcher Jayde Hansen.

First Team

Summer Jeffries, pitcher, Glencoe, Jeffries was the Lady Panthers top pitcher and helped the team reach regionals for the first time since 2009. In the circle, she was 16-13 with 105 strikeouts and only walked 64. Jeffries possessed a strong bat with a .388 batting average. She scored 28 runs and drove in 22.

Michael Ann Nelson, Fr., pitcher, Frontier, Nelson took over the pitching duties after senior Jalissa Gum went down with injury in an Aug. 27 game against Perry. The Lady Mustangs didn’t skip a beat as Nelson went 16-6 in her 22 starts, reaching the state tournament for a fourth consecutive season. The freshman posted an ERA of 1.56 with 200 strikeouts to 32 walks. Opponents hit .178 off her. Nelson had a good bat with a .402 batting average. The freshman scored 27 runs and drove in 29 with eight doubles and a triple.

Jalissa Gum, Sr., pitcher, Frontier, In her four seasons with the Lady Mustangs, Gum owns the offensive and pitching records. She missed a lot of time with a fractured ulna in her pitching arm but returned in regionals. In 12 games in the circle, Gum posted a 1.21 ERA and opponents posted a .106 batting average against her. The senior struck out 112 and walked 44. Offensively, Gum batted .576, hitting two doubles, three triples and eight home runs. Gum scored 30 runs and drove in 21. The senior will continue her career at Arkansas Tech.

Carlie Roe, So. catcher, Glencoe, Roe was the leading hitter on the Lady Panthers with a .507 batting average and a .587 on base percentage. She hit 11 home runs, six triples and 15 doubles. The sophomore catcher drove in 39 runs and scored 32.

Marissa Goodman, Jr., first baseman, Frontier, Goodman batted in the middle of the Lady Mustangs’ batting order. She posted a .380 batting average, hit two doubles, three triples and three home runs. Goodman scored 11 runs and drove in 35 with a .565 slugging percentage.

Tabithia Diaz, Jr., first baseman, Perry, Diaz batted .339 with 27 runs scored and drove in 41. Diaz hit 13 doubles and one home run, which came in the regional opener against Perkins-Tryon. Diaz played a key role in Perry’s state tournament berth.

Lauryn Sullins, Sr., outfielder, Perry, As the Lady Maroons’ leadoff batter, Sullins posted a .320 batting average and a .520 on base percentage. She hit six doubles and two triples, drove in 10 runs while scoring 34. Sullins was one of the leaders in stolen bases with eight. In center field she made 13 putouts with only one error for a 93 fielding percentage.

Tiara Ewy, Sr. utility player, Perry,  Ewy played all over the field, posting a 95 fielding percentage with 44 putouts and 42 assists. She batted for a .336 batting average with 38 runs scored and drove in 15. Ewy hit nine doubles and a triple while posting a .520 on base percentage.

Makayla Patton, So., 3B, Perry,  Patton led the Lady Maroons in home runs with six and in RBI with 43. The sophomore posted the third highest batting average at .460 and hit 10 doubles and one triple for a total of 17 extra base hits. At third base, Patton posted a 92 fielding percentage.

Honorable mentions

Amber Austin, So., P, Agra, Austin helped lead the Lady Bearcats to a second place finish in district. She also was one of the leaders offensively with a .340 batting average, scored 29 runs while driving in 18. Austin hit four doubles and two triples. On the base paths, the sophomore stole seven bases.

Jenny Hutchinson, Sr., OF, Glencoe, Hutchinson batted in the middle of the Lady Panthers’ lineup. She posted a .447 batting average with 37 runs scored and drove in 18. She hit three doubles and tripled six times.

Mykelti Shelton, Perkins-Tryon, Shelton was the Lady Demons’ top pitcher and helped them win district and advance to regionals.

Halley Randolph, So., C, Stillwater, Randolph was one of the team leaders in getting on base with a .515 on base percentage. She batted in the middle of the Lady Pioneers’ lineup hitting four home runs and 14 RBI. The sophomore catcher posted a .319 batting average.

Jenny Scarbrough, Sr., 1B, Stillwater, Scarbrough was one of the power hitters in the Lady Pioneers’ lineup with five home runs and 31 RBI. The senior batted .412 with a .436 on base percentage.

Anna Fowler, Sr., 3B, Stillwater, Fowler was a solid hitter with a .345 batting average and reached base in over 40 percent of her plate appearances. She hit one home run and drove in 13 runs.

Jacey Bales, So., P, Morrison, Bales helped lead the Lady Wildcats to a district title and regional berth. In the circle she had 3.6 strikeouts per game. At the plate, Bales hit .463 with a .482 on base percentage.
