STILLWATER, Okla. — It’s been a while since the Stillwater High School girls basketball team has taken both games of the Stillwater Basketball Festival. But after scoring 50-plus points for the second straight game, the Lady Pioneers are playing as well as coach Carl Treat could ask early in the season.

Senior Austyn Iven scored 14 points to lead Stillwater (2-0) as 12 Lady Pioneers recorded baskets in a 56-22 win over Southeast to cap off the festival Friday at the Pioneer Fieldhouse.

“Somebody was asking me the last time I went 2-0 and I really can’t remember if I’ve ever done that. I had teams with long winning streaks,” Treat said. “It’s just nice. We’ve got 21 games left before playoffs and hopefully we can keep getting better and get enough wins to get a good draw.”

Stillwater may have lit up the scoreboard for the second night in a row, but it was the defense and rebounding that paved the way for the Lady Pioneers.

The Lady Pioneers opened the game with a 12-0 run over the first five minutes, aided by a pair of 3-pointers from Iven.

“It was just mainly my teammates were able to get me the ball and make good passes,” Iven said. “I’ve been practicing a lot in the offseason and I want to have a successful senior season. I was just lucky enough that they went down.”

Along with Iven, Stillwater also got a pair of 3-pointers from junior Kayla Klaus to take a 23-6 lead after the first quarter. Klaus finished with 6 points.

The defense continued to dominate in the second quarter, holding the Lady Spartans to just 2 points all quarter.

“We’ve been working on defense a lot, so our coaches expect us not to take any possession off,” Iven said.

Already up 33-8 at the half, the Lady Pioneers extended that lead to 44-8 before Southeast got on the board in the third quarter. With such a large lead, Treat used the opportunity to get some of his younger players plenty of playing time as players like juniors Becca Worthy and Drew Baker took over for Iven and Klaus. Baker finished with a team-high eight rebounds along with 4 points, while Worthy had 7 points.

“We shared the ball really well (last night) and continued it tonight,” Treat said. “I know we didn’t shoot nearly as well as we did last night, but this is one of those games where everybody gets to play and our shot selection continues to improve.”

As a team the Lady Pioneers outrebounded the Lady Spartans 44-25, often turning those second chances into points.

“I thought we rebounded the ball really well,” Treat said. “When you’re rebounding well it gives you a bunch of extra scoring opportunities. It was just effort and anticipation. It’s something that we know we have to be able to do well and we work on it a lot. It’s just an expectation of our kids.”

With the win, Stillwater hopes to remain undefeated as it heads into the Bixby Tournament next weekend. But doing so won’t be easy.

“There’s a lot of good teams at the Bixby Tournament,” Treat said. “We’re going to have to play at a high level. You have the 5A state champion Shawnee, Bixby is a top 5 team in 6A and there’s a top 5 team from Missouri. So some of the things that worked tonight might not work in that tournament.”
