Perkins-Tryon softball slips past Frontier with walk-off in extra innings

PERKINS, Okla. — There’s the old adage that it isn’t over until it’s over. Monday night at Lady Demon Field on Perkins-Tryon High School campus it rang true as both teams overcame deficits but the Perkins-Tryon Lady Demons softball team rallied for a 5-4 extra-inning victory over the Frontier Lady Mustangs.

“It shows a lot of growth,” P-T assistant softball coach Michael Brown said. “We’re pretty young and have a lot of kids that haven’t played very much in pressure situations. We haven’t come from behind very many times this year. Anytime you can come from behind, it’s a win that can do you a lot of good.”

Frontier coach Erron Kauk said it was a good game but his young team made a couple of costly mistakes.

“We took a bad angle,” Kauk said. “That’s young kids. I got a freshman catcher and pitcher.”

The Lady Demons (13-19) took the lead early thanks to aggressive base running. Senior Jeri Adkism led off with a single and stole second and third. With two outs in the first inning, Adkism took advantage of a high pitch and slid into home for a steal.

P-T padded its lead in the third. Daysha Smith led off with line-drive double to right field. Adkism reached base for the second straight at-bat on a bunt single in the infield. Kallie Jones hit a grounder to third and Smith ran for home. Frontier’s third baseman Shannon West threw to first for an out instead of home and Smith scored.

Brown said at times the Lady Demons’ aggression on the base paths was good, but other times it was costly.

“We got a girl that was thrown out in the second inning because she missed a sign,” Brown said. “We had a couple of baserunning mistakes that probably could of cost us. They had a couple plays they didn’t make and we were fortunate.”

In the bottom of the second P-T’s Bailey Aldridge was thrown out trying to steal second. With P-T trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Macey Hall scored on a sacrifice fly but Adkism was called out at second on appeal because she left early.

The Lady Mustangs (4-20) rallied in the top of the fifth with two outs. Tristian Young started the spurt with an infield single to third to advance Tavia Clark, who walked to second. Alivia Molina hammered a double to left to bring both runners home and tie the game at two. Kristen Molina hit a fly ball in which Lady Demons’ left fielder Jones and centerfielder Jessica Howard bumped into each other, causing the ball to drop, allowing Alivia Molina to score. Senior Marissa Goodman hammered a double down the left field line to give Frontier a 4-2 lead. Kauk said his team did a good job rallying, adding it had to get used to swinging the bats.

“Our bats were a little sluggish,” Kauk said. “We got rained out every game last week, when you don’t see live pitching for a while it takes them a few innings for the bats to get going.”

Frontier had the Lady Demons beat in the bottom of the seventh when Smith hit a grounder to Clark, who stepped on second for one out but held on to the ball allowing Smith to safely reach first. Perkins starting pitcher Mykelti Shelton made the Lady Mustangs pay as she hit a double to the fence in center field. Shelton would be thrown out at third to end the inning.

The Lady Mustangs threatened in the top of the eighth as West singled and Jacqlin McCormick walked — putting runners on first and second with one out. Pinch-hitter Jessica Driggers struck out and Harris flied out to first to end the inning.

Adkism led off the Lady Demon eighth with a walk and stole second for her fifth steal of the game. Howard sacrificed her to third. Makenzie Martin hit the third pitch of her at-bat to left and Frontier left fielder McCormick backed off the ball and let it hit the ground. Adkism scored standing up. Kauk said his team needs better awareness.

“I got a freshman left fielder that didn’t dive for a ball in the last at-bat,” Kauk said. “Whether she could have caught it or not, she let up. She has to know that’s the winning run.”

Shelton earned the victory and pitched all eight innings giving up four runs (two earned), four walks but struck out nine. Sophomore Michaelanne Nelson made her first start of the season after being out with an arm injury and pitched three innings, allowing two runs but struck out six.

The Lady Demons host Okemah at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The Lady Mustangs start play in the district tournament at Frontier Thursday against Copan and Shidler.
