Jacob Peyton an impact player for Perkins-Tryon football team

STILLWATER, Okla. — Every team needs players to make key plays to win games. Friday night in Perkins, Jacob Peyton was the impact player the Demons needed to beat Verdigris 44-21.

At the very beginning of the game, Peyton made his mark as he fielded the opening kickoff on a hop and took it 80 yards for a touchdown, giving P-T a 6-0 lead. Peyton said he was glad he could help the team.

“It bounced right up into my arms and I was able to take it all the way,” Peyton said.

Friday wasn’t the first time Peyton took one to the house. He returned a kickoff last season against Prague.

On defense, Peyton knocked the ball away from Verdigris’ running back Aaron Vann and recovered the fumble. The takeaway eventually led to another Perkins-Tryon touchdown and increased its lead to 28-0 in the first quarter. Last year, Verdigris beat Perkins-Tryon 41-14. Peyton said it was a big win especially since his team nearly reversed the score.

“Last year it didn’t go so well in Verdigris,” Peyton said. “We were coming off a tough loss to McLoud. We got our confidence back and we are going to take it into next week against Seminole.”

After rushing for 71 yards on seven carries Friday, Peyton is the Demons’ leading rusher this season. The junior running back isn’t the only player that can run the ball in P-T’s backfield. Running back Tyler Taff, fullback Clark Crotty and quarterback Shelby Reese also have rushed for more than 100 yards this season. Peyton said it’s exciting to have so many good players.

“It’s exciting knowing that if you don’t get the ball the person who is, is going to do something good with it,” Peyton said.

The junior running back said this season is a redemption season for the Demons, which lost their last four games last season as injuries piled up.

“Last year we didn’t finish like we wanted to,” Peyton said. “This season we are getting pay back.”

In the first week, the Demons avenged their playoff loss to Jones with a 23-14 victory. Peyton said he’s now focused on getting Perkins-Tryon off to a good start in district, which starts Friday at undefeated Seminole. It’s another game P-T is looking to avenge as the Chieftains beat the Demons 14-7 in Perkins last season.
