Senior Mykelti Shelton earns weekly honor with final game for Lady Demons

STILLWATER, Okla. — On Oct. 2, Perkins-Tryon senior pitcher Mykelti Shelton had just been lit up for seven runs in a 7-1 loss to No. 3 Washington in the first game of a Class 3A regional softball tournament. Shelton didn’t have much time to get that game out of her head as she had to pitch immediately against the No. 10 Alva Lady Goldbugs. The senior delivered two victories and helped the Lady Demons reach the regional finals.

“It was kind of exciting,” Shelton said. “The second game was so much fun. It was really exciting to win two games, I was so happy for us.”

Against Alva, Shelton was spotted a 3-0 lead and took advantage while pitching out of jams to help the Lady Demons to an 8-3 victory. The Lady Goldbugs got within one before P-T pulled away with four runs in the seventh. Shelton said it was tough but just relied on her game and her teammates.

“I just told myself to keep hitting my spots,” Shelton said. “If I hit my spot and they hit, I knew my teammates had my back.”

On Oct. 3, Shelton avenged her regional loss from her junior season with a 12-0 victory over Perry. In last season’s regional Shelton and the Lady Demons lost to Perry 8-0. The senior pitcher only gave up five hits and one walk. Shelton said it was a fun game to pitch in.

“Everyone was hitting the ball so well,” Shelton said. “It was easier to pitch and play.”

Shelton was the only pitcher on the Lady Demons’ roster. She had to deal with the good, bad and ugly of 17-23 season. The senior said her coach Carla Fuss helped her get through those times.

“She would come out and pump me up,” Shelton said. “She just told me to stay focused and be ready for the next pitch and we would get through it.”

Besides her coach, Shelton had someone special help give her advice — former Oklahoma State pitcher Kat Espinosa.

“It means a lot,” Shelton said. “She has a lot of advice, we think a lot alike. On the third day of the tournament, she noticed I was getting a little weak and she told me to use a little more leg drive. Let things like that help.”

Shelton hopes to continue her career in college. The senior pitcher really wants to help people as an occupational therapist and help people with disabilities find their independence.

“My aunt has down syndrome and I’ve been with her friends that also have disabilities,” Shelton said. “We have a family friend that has cerebral palsy. I know they want to do some many things but those little things keep them from doing them. I want to help them more. Independence is a big deal.”
