Pawnee struggles with No. 4 Hennessey, Cushing looking forward to Highway 33 rivalry game

The Pawnee Black Bears simply were no match for the No. 4 Hennessey Eagles in a 48-0 loss Thursday.

“We got a lot of tough things to work on,” Pawnee coach Marlon Houston said. “Hennessey is tough competition and a lot of things needed to go our way to compete with them.”

The Eagles (7-0, 3-0) scored 20 points in the first quarter and led 34-0 at halftime. The Black Bears only managed 40 yards of total offense and only picked up two first downs with one being by penalty. Hurting Pawnee’s effort was three fumbles, with two of them being recovered by Hennessey and nine penalties for 90 yards.

Quarterback Marlon Houston Jr. provided most of the Black Bears’ offense — completing 4 of 12 passes for 17 yards and rushed for 13 yards on five attempts. Next week won’t get easier for the Black Bears (2-5, 0-4) as they face Chisholm (6-1, 2-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Enid.

“We got the same common opponent,” Houston said. “They lost by one to Hennessey. We are going to have our hands full again.”

Tigers look forward to Highway 33 rivalry game

CUSHING — The Cushing Tigers had no problems dismantling the Chandler Lions in a 48-14 victory Thursday. Now their attention is turned to Friday’s Highway 33 rivalry game against the Perkins-Tryon Demons at 7:30 p.m. Friday at O’Dell Field in Cushing.

The Tigers (7-0, 3-0) beat Perkins 42-27 last season. Cushing coach Barrett Shupe said it doesn’t matter what the records are it will be a competitive game Friday.

“You can throw the records out the window,” Shupe said. “The kids will be excited, both towns will be excited. It’s going to be a very physical game.”

The Demons (4-3, 2-2) are entering the game on a two-game winning streak. Shupe said he expects P-T’s best game.

“(Lloyd) Wertman is a great coach and does a good job with those guys,” Shupe said. “He will have them ready.”
