Perry freshman Mendenhall wins state titles in sprints

MOORE, Okla. — Perry’s Kolby Mendenhall may have competed in his first state track meet. At the end of the day, he looked like a pro as he won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes at the Class 3A state track meet at Moore High School.

“It’s a big accomplishment,” Perry coach Chad Lindsley said. “He ran well for a freshman.”

Mendenhall recorded a personal best in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.92. The freshman won the 100-meter dash in 10.89 seconds. Perry also had a third-place finish in the shot put from Meagan Drake, who threw 35 feet and nine inches. Tabitha Diaz finished 10th with a throw of 32 feet and two inches. The Lady Maroons also had fifth-place finishes in the high jump by Riley Bellmon and Carley Calhoon, both reached five feet. Natalie Williams finished seventh in the 200-meter dash (26.71).

Perkins-Tryon’s best performance came from Travis Cotton, who turned in a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.23) and a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.19). Bailey Wensler finished seventh in the mile at 5:44.91.

Class A

MIDWEST CITY — The Coyle Lady Bluejackets finished third in the Class A meet with 59 points. Tyra Aska won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.34 and second in the 200-meter dash (27.34). Coyle also won the 400-meter and 800-meter relays. Anika Smalley finished sixth in the 100-meter dash (12.83). Anthony McLeod turned in a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.07.

Glencoe’s Jenny Baker just missed a state championship in the shot put, missing by six inches with a throw of 35 feet and 1.5 inches. Coach Stephen Castlebury said she represented Glencoe well.

“We are extremely proud of her success and dedication,” Castlebury said.

Frontier’s Thristan Young finished 11th in the high jump with a leap of four feet and eight inches. Shannon West finished 14th in the shot put with a throw of 29 feet and eight inches.

Class 4A

MOORE — The Cushing Tigers gained a state champion as Hunter Boykin won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.99. Karlie Jones finished seventh in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet and 10 inches.

Class 2A

MIDWEST CITY — Pawnee’s Kamille Ellis turned a personal best at the 300-meter hurdles as she finished fifth with a time of 48.75.

Also competing Saturday was Ripley’s Abe Lincoln, who finished eighth in the shot put with a throw of 43 feet and 7 inches.
