Noble hopes for healthy senior year as Pioneer’s quarterback

STILLWATER, Okla. — To say that Braxton Noble’s run as starting quarterback of the Stillwater Pioneers hasn’t gone as planned would be an understatement. In his sophomore season, Noble missed the second half of the season with a separated shoulder. Last season, Noble was out for the last four games of the season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in the second half of an October game against Booker T. Washington.

After completing their first team camp and two weeks of spring practice, Noble is ready to go and hopes his third season as the signal caller goes better than the first two.

“It was really tough being injured and having to watch all my teammates being able to lift and I had to sit and watch,” Noble said. “It was horrible.”

Noble said recovering from his ACL tear was tougher than his shoulder injury.

“I had to spend five months recovering from it,” Noble said. “I’m not taking anything for granted right now. I’m just happy to be out here playing with my friends.”

Coach Tucker Barnard said Noble worked really hard and was diligent in rehabbing from last season’s injury.

“He’s ahead of schedule,” Barnard said. “We didn’t think he would be able to participate in spring ball. He’s practicing at 100 percent. We are really pleased with his recovery.”

Senior receiver Brandon Prather — who will likely be Noble’s top target in 2014 — said he may be slower but has looked fine during drills.

“He can’t move as fast as he used to,” Prather said. “He looks good passing and stuff.”

Noble wears a brace on his knee but said he’s had no limitations in practice. During team camp on Tuesday at Pioneer Stadium, Noble made several deep throws and even ran the ball some. There were other times he succumbed to the defensive pressure.

“My body is in really good condition right now,” Noble said. “Mentally, I’m good. The coaches haven’t broken us down too much yet. ... I haven’t been stopped yet.”

Though Noble will likely be running out with the first team offense when it opens against Deer Creek on Sept. 5, he doesn’t take his position for granted.

“It’s a new year, anything could happen,” Noble said. “There could be a new move-in who could be the next Peyton Manning or something. You always have to go out and play your hardest.”

Noble and the Pioneers will travel to Jenks Monday and Tuesday for another team camp.
