Gage Stallworth has been stellar for Cushing

STILLWATER, Okla. — For Cushing junior Gage Stallworth, sprinting through defensive lines and gaining a lot of yards is nothing new. Last week playing against Perkins-Tryon for the first time as a district opponent, Stallworth carried the Tigers offensively in the second half and gained 347 yards and scored five touchdowns.

Stallworth carried the ball 27 times in the second half for 243 yards while also contributing in the passing game with two receptions for 45 yards. Four of five of the junior running back’s touchdowns came in the second half, with three in the fourth. Stallworth did fumble but P-T wasn’t able to cash in.

“Last week our whole team executed well,” Stallworth said. “We got the job done.”

Having talented running backs isn’t something that’s foreign for the Tigers. Last season they were led by Dawson Myers, who rushed for 1,474 yards and scored 27 touchdowns. Coach Barrett Shupe said it’s exciting that Cushing is producing solid running backs.

“Gage understands what he does and what the offensive line does for him,” Shupe said. “The greatest thing is (Gage) is the first one to tell the offensive line that they did a good job.”

The junior running back’s performance against the Demons earned him a third nomination for Marine Corps Elite Warrior of the Week Stallworth won in Week 2 after the Tigers victory over Perry and was nominated in Week 5 after a come from behind victory over Bristow.

“It’s great being in the top few players that get nominated every week,” Stallworth said.

On Friday, Stallworth hopes to help Cushing win the district championship against Seminole.

“I’m really excited,” Stallworth said. “We have the number one team in our district coming to Cushing. We are going to have our crowd behind us. I think we can finish the night undefeated in our district and win a district championship.”
